Undoubtedly, Humayun received an empty treasury and a wavering throne from his father in succession. It would have created problems and difficulties to every efficient ruler whosoever he might be. In fact, the causes which contributed to his exile were mostly created by Humayun.

First, he committed a great blunder by granting concessions and dividing the empire among his selfish brothers. It deprived him of t he recruiting region and weakened his army.

Secondly, as he had no money in his treasury nor he was a very competent commander, however, he made an invasion over Kalinjar and failed to achieve success against the Hindu ruler.

Thirdly, he underestimated the power of his arch enemy Sher Khan and thought that he could be crushed at any time with a bit of courage, it have a chance to Sher Khan to flourish rapidly and weakened the Mughal empire in India.

Fourthly, Humayun failed to understand that there was a pact between Bahadur Shah of Gujarat and Sher Khan of Bihar. The scheme of invasion which he concocted against Bahadur Shah of Gujarat was full of shortcomings; therefore, soon he was deprived of the conquered provinces like Malwa and Gujarat.

Fifthly, Humayun wasted a great part of his treasury in giving grand feasts and distributing presents to his nobles and relatives.

Sixth, Humayun did not avail himself of the opportunity of crushing the power of Bahadur Shah when he was involved in a war against the Rajputs and queen mother Karnavati requested him for help. Thus he lost the sympathy of the Rajputs.

Seventhly, as Humayun was an inefficient commander, he could not take firm decision when he waged a war against Sher Khan.

Eighthly, the battles of Chausa and Bilgram proved to be failures and brought bad name to Humayun. Actually the inefficiency and un-farsightedness of Humayun was the sole reason of the failure.

Dr. R.P. Tripathi holds a very sympathetic view towards him and writes that efficiency of his rivals and their equally powerful army and artillery forced Humayun to bow down before his arch enemy Sher Khan.
